AI boom WSTS raises global semiconductor sales forecast to a record high

AI is booming, the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics Association (WSTS) has revised up its forecast for global semiconductor sales this year, which will set a record high. Among them, logic chip sales will increase by 20%, and semiconductor sales are expected to continue to set a record high next year (2026).
The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) issued a press release stating that according to the latest forecast report released by WSTS, as investment in AI data centers will continue to be hot, the demand for logic chips such as memory and GPU will maintain high growth. Therefore, the global semiconductor sales forecast for this year will be revised up from the previous estimate of US$697.184 billion (December 3, 2024) to US$700.874 billion, an annual increase of 11.2%, and a double-digit (more than 10%) increase for the second consecutive year. Annual sales will exceed the US$700 billion mark for the first time in history, far exceeding the US$630.549 billion in 2024, setting a new record for the second consecutive year.
WSTS revised the global sales of chips (ICs) in 2025 from the previous estimate of US$600.069 billion to US$611.582 billion, an annual increase of 13.4%. In terms of IC details, WSTS revised the global sales of logic chips, including GPUs and other products, in 2025 from the previous estimate of US$243.782 billion to US$267.259 billion, a sharp increase of 23.9%; the global sales of memory were revised down from the previous estimate of US$189.407 billion to US$184.841 billion, an increase of 11.7% year-on-year.
WSTS pointed out that due to the expansion of application fields such as edge AI, it is expected to drive the increase in the amount of semiconductors installed in electronic machines. In 2026, the global semiconductor sales are expected to increase by 8.5% year-on-year to US$760.7 billion, which will continue to set a new record.
WSTS estimates that in 2026, the global IC sales will increase by 9.1% year-on-year to US$667.390 billion, of which the sales of logic chips are expected to increase by 7.3% year-on-year to US$286.842 billion, and the memory is expected to increase by 16.2% year-on-year to US$214.826 billion.
