TSMC continues to benefit, with its advanced process capacity below 7nm growing 69% in three years

The artificial intelligence (AI) industry has been booming for two years, driving the market demand for advanced node processes. This is because with the growing development of large language models (LLM) and large reasoning models (LRM), there is also the large-scale deployment of AI reasoning in various applications.
The International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) said that by 2028, the production capacity of advanced manufacturing technology (below 7 nanometers) will grow significantly. According to SEMI's research, the overall output of 12-inch wafers will grow at an annual rate of 7% from the end of 2024 to 2028. By 2028, the global monthly production capacity of 12-inch wafers will reach 11.1 million pieces, setting a new record in the industry's history.
As for the growth of 12-inch wafer production capacity, there is another main reason, that is, the rapid growth of more complex process production capacity. The production capacity below 7 nanometers will grow by 69%, from 850,000 pieces per month in 2024 to 1.4 million pieces in 2028, with a compound annual growth rate of 14%, which is twice the growth rate of overall production capacity. If the scope of advanced node processes is further narrowed, the growth rate of production capacity below 2 nanometers will be faster. It will grow from less than 20,000 pieces per month in 2025 to more than 50,000 pieces per month in 2028, which means that the production capacity has more than doubled.
SEMI emphasized that at the same time, the cost of production equipment used for advanced node processes has also increased sharply, and is expected to increase from US$26 billion in 2024 to more than US$50 billion in 2028, with an annual growth rate of 18%. Among them, the sales amount of production tools used for 2 nanometers and below is expected to soar by 120%, from US$19 billion to US$43 billion, which shows the booming demand in the advanced node market in the future.
